GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team closed out the annual Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke on the Duke Golf Course in 10th place overall in the challenging field. The Spartans will be back in action Oct. 2-3 at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate hosted by N.C. State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club.

The field at the 2017 Rod Myers Invitational is a loaded 12-team group, featuring nine teams ranked in the top 100 in last year’s end of the year Golfstat rankings, including four top 25 teams. Highlighting the field with the No. 90 ranked Spartans included No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 7 and national runner-up Oregon, No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 23 Duke, No. 48 Penn State, No. 49 Liberty, No. 80 Louisville, No. 94 East Carolina, UC Davis, ETSU and Princeton.

The Spartans finished in 10th place with an 18-over par 882 score after rounds of 298-290-294, finishing ahead of Southern Conference rival ETSU. Wake Forest won the team title with a 29-under par 835 (282-276-277) while host Duke moved up to second with a 22-under par 842 (289-279-272). Norman Xiong of Oregon and Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest tied for the individual lead at 12-under par 204.

Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) led the Spartans in his first career collegiate event with an even-par 216 score to finish in a tie for 21st overall. Lyerly opened with a 2-over par 74 in round one before recording back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 71. Sunday, he tallied three birdies, two bogeys and 13 par scores in the under-par round.

Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished in a tie for 29th overall at 4-over par 220. Hendrix opened with an even-par 72 in round one before coming back with consecutive rounds of 2-over par 74. He record one birdie, three bogeys and 14 par scores Sunday as he finished second in the entire field with 42 pars in 54 holes.

Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) continued to bounce back from a tough first round and moved up 18 places in the standings Sunday finishing in a tie for 40th overall at 7-over par 227. Brightwell opened the week with a 6-over par 78 in round one before rebounding with an even-par 72 in round two and a 1-over par 73 in round three when he posted three birdies, four bogeys and 11 par scores.

Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) also finished tied for 40th overall at 7-over par 227. Stockwell opened with a 2-over par 74 in round one and a 1-over par 73 in round two. He finished out the tournament with a 4-over par 76 in round three with two birdies and 11 pars.

Freshman Justin Emmons (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) rounded out the lineup in a tie for 67th overall at 17-over par 233. Emmons posted a 6-over par 78 in round two before coming back with a 2-over par 74 in round three. He has his toughest round of the weekend Sunday with a 9-over par 81.

Sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) placed in 67th overall with a 17-over par 233 (77-71-85) playing as an individual. Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) was the Spartans’ second individual on the weekend with a 19-over par 235 (77-83-85) to finish in 69th place.
