ELON, N.C. – Coming off of an emotional five-set matchup with High Point last night, UNCG volleyball couldn’t keep the momentum rolling in the second match of the Tussle in the Triad. The Spartans fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) to the Elon Phoenix inside Alumni Gym Saturday afternoon. UNCG falls to 7-4 on the season, with Elon improving to 9-3.
Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) led the Spartan offense with 13 kills in the match. UNCG hit at a .172 average with seven players earning multiple kills.
Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) paced the offense with 26 assists and led the defense with 13 digs. She added three kills in nine attacks. Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) recorded six digs, with Anna Romaniszyn (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek) and Grace Howell (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall-Heath) each recording five digs.
The first set saw Elon go on a run after being tied at 10. The Phoenix score five-straight points to take the lead at 15-10. UNCG rallied back and used a Muench service ace to cut the lead down to 19-18. Elon extended its lead out to 24-21, but UNCG rallied again to cut the lead to 24-23 after a block from Penner and Megan Moran (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg). Elon shut down the Spartan rally, getting a kill from Kam Terry to take the first set, 25-23.
UNCG took a 14-12 lead in the second set before the Phoenix rallied to take the lead. Elon scored seven of the next eight points to go up 19-15. The Spartans went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead down to 22-21, but the Phoenix closed the set scoring the last three points to take the set, 25-21.
In the third set, UNCG trailed early before going on a 7-1 run to take the lead at 15-14. Elon came right back, scoring the next three points to take the lead at 16-15. The Phoenix extended their lead out to 20-17 before a UNCG timeout slowed the rally. The Spartans scored back-to-back points to cut the lead to 20-19 before Elon went on a 4-1 run to push the match to match point. UNCG rallied to score three-straight points, but the comeback fell short.
UNCG volleyball is back in action this evening inside Fleming Gym at 4 p.m. against the Navy Midshipmen.
