Women's Golf Sets Program-Record On Day One Of Jim West Challenge
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team had a record-setting performance Monday at the Jim West Challenge hosted by Texas State. The Spartans set a program-record for lowest total team score in a single round, posting a 287 in the first round on the par-71, 6,010-yard Fazio Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. The third and final round will be played Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start (Holes 8-11) with live scoring available at www.golfstateresults.com.
The Spartans fired an opening round of 287 on the par-71 course, breaking the UNCG single-round total of 289 set in September of 2011 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. The 287 score marks just the second-time in program history UNCG has posted a score sub-290. UNCG finished the first two rounds in ninth place overall in the highly competitive field with a 17-over par 585 score. The Spartans followed up their 287-score with a 298 score in round two.
The field at the Jim West Challenge features 12 top-100 teams, including seven ranked in the top 50 at the end of last season. Joining the Spartans in the field includes host Texas State, Augusta (42), Duke (10), Kent State (14), Missouri, UNCG, Notre Dame, Oklahoma (25), Southern Miss , Texas A&M (24), TCU (40), UTSA , Texas Tech (35) and Tulsa. Duke leads after the first two rounds at 26-under par 542 (269-273) while Oklahoma is second at 12-under par 556 (279-277). Leona Maguire of Duke holds a five-stroke lead at 12-under par 130 after rounds of 67 and 63.
Freshman Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) highlighted the Spartans’ play in her collegiate debut. Bettle sits in a tie for 16th place overall with a 1-under par 141 score. She opened her collegiate career with a 3-under par 68 in round one as she posted five birdies, two bogeys and 11 pars. She followed that up with a 2-over par 73 in round two, recording three birdies, five bogeys and 10 par scores. Bettle led the entire field in par-5 scoring through the first 36-holes, scoring 5-under par on the day. She placed ninth overall in the field with eight total birdies in two rounds.
"It was an awesome first day at the Carloton Woods," Bettle said. "We did a great job as a team and really showed that we are on the right track. I am happy with my performance today, althought there are always shots you can play better, but I stayed focused and hit the greens today. I am really proud to be a part of the Spartan family."
Sophomore Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) finished the first two rounds tied for 27th place overall with a 3-over par 145 score. Tichy opened her day with a 4-over par 75, posting four birdies in the round. She followed that up with the Spartans’ second-best round of the day with a 1-under par 70 in round two. She tallied five birdies, four bogeys and nine par scores in the second round. She finished the first two rounds third in the field in par-5 scoring at 3-under par and was fourth overall with nine birdies. Tichy’s second-round score of 70 marked a career-low, surpassing her previous low of 74 set last year at the Bryan National.
"I was struggling with my drive and shots into the green this morning but I made a good comeback on the second round," Tichy said. "We are all super excited about breaking the program-record by shooting a 287 as a team. I can't wait to see what we have in store for tomorrow."
Freshman Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) sits in a tie for 45th place overall in her collegiate debut. Kenkel tallied a 7-over par 149 score, posting on opening round of 1-over par 72 before recording a 6-over par 77 in round two. Kenkel tallied three birdies, four bogeys and 11 par scores in the opening round.
Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) ended the day in a tie for 48th overall at 8-over par 150. Asensio opened the day with a 1-over par 72 in round one with four birdies, five bogeys and nine par scores. She tallied a 7-over par 78 in round two.
Freshman Sara Rydman (Taby, Sweden) sits in 54th place overall in her collegiate debut, playing as an individual. Rydman posted a 9-over par 151 score as she opened with a 1-over par 72 in round one and an 8-over par 79 in round two. She notched two birdies, three bogeys and 13 par scores in round one. Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) rounded out the Spartans’ lineup in a tie for 68th place overall at 17-over par 159 (76-83).
