Men's Golf Wraps Up Wolfpack Spring Open In Sixth Place, Brightwell In Seventh
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team wrapped up the regular season with a sixth place finish at the Wolfpack Spring Open hosted by N.C. State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club Saturday. Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the way with a career-best seventh-place finish in the Spartans' final tune-up for the Southern Conference Championships played at Pinehurst No. 9 April 23-25.
The Spartans finished the event with a 1-over par 853 on the par-71 course, finishing sixth in the field that includes six teams ranked in the top-75 nationally. UNCG opened with a 4-over par 288 before setting a single-round school-record with a 15-under par 269 score. The 269 score is six stroke higher that the previous program-record of 275 set at the USF Invitational in March of 2014. The Spartans closed out the week with a 12-over par 296 in the final round Saturday.
No. 42 N.C. State won the event with a 31-under par 821 (269-274-278) on its home course. No. 15 Clemson was second at 18-under par 834 (278-267-289) while No. 19 Duke was third at 3-under par 849 (282-279-288). Nolan Mills of N.C. State took home the individual honors with a 13-under par 200 score, posting rounds of 66-67-67.
Brightwell held the 36-hole lead after the first two rounds Friday and finished in seventh place overall, surpassing his previous top finish of 15th place at the Linger Longer. He opened the event with a 4-under par 67 with five birdies, one bogey and 12 par scores. He followed that up with another career-best, tying the UNCG single-round record with an 8-under par 63 in round two. He was impressive as ever in the second round, posting eight birdies and 10 par scores. His 63 ties the school-record mark held by both Roy Dixon and Carter Jenkins. He closed out the weekend with an 8-over par 79 Saturday with 11 par scores.
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished 21st overall with an even-par 213 score. Hendrix opened the week with a 1-under par 70 before posting a 3-under par 68. He followed that up with a 3-over par 75 in the final round, posting 12 pars scores and one birdie on his final hole of the day.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) moved up to 46th place overall as he finished 7-over par 220. Stockwell started slowly on the week, posting a 7-over par 78 in round one. He rebounded with a 1-under par 70 in round two before posting 1-over par 72 in round three. He recorded four birdies, 11 pars, 1 bogey and two double bogeys Saturday
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) also finished tied for 46th place overall with a 7-over par 220. Cansler opened the week with a 3-over par 74 before carding a career-best 3-under par 68 in round two. He wrapped up his weekend with a 7-over par 78 in the final round.
Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte, Latin) rounded out the week in a tie for 54th place with a 9-over par 222. McGlone improved on each of his rounds this weekend, opening with a 6-over par 77 in round one. He improved three strokes to 3-over par 74 in round two before carding an even-par 71 in the final round. He posted six birdies, six bogeys and six par scores on the round Saturday.
The Spartans played four individuals in the field this weekend with freshman Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) leading the way in 61st place at 10-over par 223 (74-74-75). Senior Riley Davis (Kinston, N.C./UNC Pembroke) placed 74th overall with a 16-over par 229 (82-81-76). Freshman Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) placed 88th at 26-over par 239 (82-81-76) and sophomore Mark Johnston (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) was 89th with a 27-over par 240 (80-78-82).
