Winning Streak Snapped as Baseball Drops Matchup at NC State
RALEIGH, N.C. – UNCG Baseball saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park on NC State’s campus. The Spartans fell to the NC State Wolfpack 10-1. This was the second meeting between the schools the season, with UNCG falling in both games. After dropping the last matchup with the Wolfpack, UNCG went on to win four-straight.
“NC State played an outstanding game today.” Head coach Link Jarrett said. “(Johnny) Piedmonte had his cut fastball working and we could not find the answer. We were pleased with how (Michael) Bates came in and threw. Unfortunately we did not execute at a high enough level tonight in any phase of the game.”
UNCG used six pitchers in the loss on Tuesday night. Sophomore Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) got his first start of the season. Lewis threw 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs while suffering the loss. Alex Sova (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) was first out of the bullpen, and gave up two runs in 0.1 innings. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) was next out of the bullpen, allowing two hits without allowing a run.
Ben Kerner (Cary, N.C./Brunswick CC) worked in an inning, allowing two hits and two runs. Michael Bates (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) made his second appearance of the season. The redshirt sophomore threw 2.0 innings without allowing a hit, and picking up one strikeout. Brandon Stephens (Willow Spring, N.C./Wake Christian Academy) finished up the game, giving up two hits, two runs, one earned and striking out a batter.
The high-powered Spartan offense ran into some trouble in NC State starting pitcher Johnny Piedmonte. UNCG tallied just four hits, two off Piedmonte in the outing. Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) broke up Piedmonte’s no-hit bid with two outs in the top of the seventh inning with an infield single. Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) followed with a double to score Moritz. Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) added a leadoff double in the top of the eighth. Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) added a single in the ninth.
The Wolfpack used a Brett Kinneman three-run home run in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early lead. NC State added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning. After back-to-back singles from Stephen Pitarra and Will Wilson started the frame, a double play moved Pitarra to third. Brad Debo hit a single to second base to score Pitarra and put the Wolfpack up 4-0.
The Wolfpack tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single from Wilson. NC State added two more in the fifth, one on a Joe Dunand home run, and another on an infield hit.
Moritz legged out an infield hit in the top of the seventh and came around to score when the Wolfpack right fielder misjudged a fly ball, falling in for Goss’ double.
The Wolfpack rounded out the scoring in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs.
The Blue and Gold is back in action this Thursday night as it hosts the Wofford Terriers in a three-game Southern Conference series.
