Men’s Golf Finishes Sixth At Irish Creek As Three Spartans Finish In Top 25
GREESNBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf finished sixth overall at the challenging Irish Creek Intercollegiate Sunday hosted by Davidson at The Club at Irish Creek. The Spartans placed three in the top 25 individually, with freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) leading the way in 19th place overall. The Spartans will wrap up the regular season April 14-15 at the Wolfpack Spring Open, their final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships at Pinehurst No. 9 April 23-25.
The Spartans finished sixth overall at 1-over par 853 on the par-71, 7,099-yard course, topping two teams ranked in the top 30 in North Carolina (27) and South Carolina (24). UNCG opened the weekend with back-to-back rounds of 282 before posting a 289 in the final round Sunday. No. 42 North Florida won the team title with a 14-under par 838 (287-273-278) while No. 8 Wake Forest was second at 12-under par 840 (280-284-276) and No. 31 Florida State was third at 10-under par 842 (286-273-283). Cristobal Del Solar of Florida State won the individual title with an 8-under par 205 (72-65-68).
Brightwell finished in 19th place overall with an even-par 213 score. He opened with an even-par 71 in round one and a 1-under par 70 in round two. He finished the event with a 1-over par 72 Sunday as he posted four birdies, five bogeys and nine par scores. He finished third overall in the field with 14 birdies on the day and ranked fourth in the field in par-4 scoring at 1-under par. His 19th place finish marked his second-straight top-20 showing after placing a career-best 15th overall at the Linger Longer Invitational.
Sophomore men’s golfer Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) was the Spartans’ top riser up the leaderboard Sunday, moving up 23 spots to finish in a tie for 25th place overall at 1-over par 214. Hendrix opened with a 1-over par 72 and a 2-over par 73 in the first two rounds Saturday. He posted a 2-under par 69 Sunday for the Spartans’ low round of the day, posting five birdies, three bogeys and 10 par scores. He opened his final round with five birdies in his first 10 holes of the day. He finished the week tied for second overall in par-5 scoring at 6-under par.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) also finished in a tie for 25th place overall with a 1-over par 214. Stockwell opened with a flourish Saturday, posting a 2-under par 69 in round one and a 3-under par 68 in round two. He posted a 6-over par 77 in his final round Sunday, finishing with 13 par scores but no birdies in the third round.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) finished tied for 34th overall with a 3-over par 216. He opened the weekend with a 1-under par 70 before posting rounds of 72 and 74 to close out the event. He tallied 13 pars Sunday and birdied hole No. 6. He finished tied or sixth overall in the field with 38 par scores on the weekend.
Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) rounded out the lineup in a tie for 54th place with a 7-over par 220. McGlone posted rounds of 74-72-74 on the weekend and finished Sunday with 12 par scores and two birdies. Senior Riley Davis (Kinston, N.C./UNC Pembroke) played as an individual and finished 92nd overall with a 26-over par 239 (83-75-81).
