Stockwell Leads Men’s Golf Into Fourth Place At Irish Creek After 36-Holes

GREESNBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior men’s golfer Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) sits in third place, two shots off the lead, to help the Spartans into a fourth place tie after the first two rounds of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate Saturday hosted by Davidson at The Club at Irish Creek. The third and final round will be played on the par-71, 7,099-yard course with the Spartans set for a shotgun start from holes No. 4-6. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.

The Spartans are tied for fourth overall the No. 8 Wake Forest at 4-under par 564. UNCG posted back-to-back rounds of 2-under par 282 on the day, tying the Demon Deacons. The Spartans trail No. 44 Kennesaw State, which leads with an 11-under par 557 (278-279). No. 31 Florida State is second at 9-under par 559 (286-273) and No. 42 North Florida is third at 8-under par 560 (287-273). UNCG leads two other nationally ranked teams in No. 24 South Carolina (568) and No. 27 North Carolina (568).

Stockwell sits just two shots out of the lead in third place overall with a 5-under par 137. He trails Josh Lee of Florida State by two strokes as Lee posted a 7-under par 135 (66-69), while Bennett Baker is in second at 6-under par 136 (68-68), playing as an individual.

Stockwell opened he day with a 2-under par 69 in the first round, posting four birdies, two bogeys and 12 par scores. He followed that up with a 3-under par 68 in round two, recording 11 pars, two bogeys and five birdies. He finished his round with four straight birdies on holes No. 5-8 to go from 1-over par to 3-under par on the round. Stockwell ranks fifth in the field with nine birdies in the first 36-holes while he ranks second in par-4 scoring at 4-under par. His second round score of 68 is a season-low and ties his career low, matching the first round score from the Auto Trader Intercollegiate his sophomore season.

Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) is tied for 14th overall at 1-under par 141. Brightwell opened the day with an even-par 71 as he had an up-and-down round with six birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. He followed that up with a 1-under par 70 in round two with four birdies, three bogeys and 11 par scores. He also finished his round strong, closing with three straight birdies.

Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) continued his strong play with an even-par 142 to sit in a tie for 25th place overall. Cansler opened the day with a 1-under par 70 as he posted three birdies in the round and followed that up with a 1-over par 72 in round two.

Sophomore men’s golfer Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) is tied for 48th overall with a 3-over par 145. Hendrix posted an opening round of 1-over par 72 before carding a 2-over par 73 as he tallied three birdies in each round. Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) rounds out the lineup in 54th place overall with a 4-over par 146. McGlone opened with a 3-over par 74 before rebounding with a 1-over par 72 as he recorded seven birides in the first 36-holes.
