GREENSBORO, N.C.- Back on the court Saturday morning after winning a thrilling five-set showdown with Air Force the night before in the first game of the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic, UNC Greensboro fell to Maryland by a final of 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 21-25).

The Spartans are now 1-1 on the season.

“This was a hard fought match,” said Head Coach Corey Carlin. “We knew Maryland would present some certain challenges for us. Our goal was to come out with good focus and communication to start the match, building off of our strong finish last night, and we did that. Our energy was much more consistent from start to finish today.

“It’s still very early in the season and we continue to take good steps forward in our growth. Our challenge now is to continue moving forward, to build on what we did this morning and apply the lessons learned from this match when we take on Wake Forest tonight.”

UNCG battled throughout the first set with Maryland, as the Spartans and Terrapins exchanged the lead four times and were tied on 10 occasions. However, the Terrapins were able to score a 25-19 set victory after pulling away from a 15-15 tie.

In the second set, the Spartans and Terrapins remained on equal footing midway through the frame, being tied at 11 before Maryland was able to finish off the frame 25-19.

The Spartans continued to fight in the third set before dropping it 25-21. In the final frame, UNCG was knotted up with Maryland five times and swapped the lead three times as well.

Junior Emily Keilen led the Spartans in both attacks (26) and kills (nine) while senior Allison Penner once again led the way for the team in assists with 17.

Through the first two games of the season, Penner – who entered this season second all-time in program history in assists – has 59 assists.

The Spartans will return to action this evening when they take on Wake Forest in the finale of the Spartan Demon-Deacon Classic. The game will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Reynolds Gymnasium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
