STOCKTON, Calif. – The No. 11 seed UNCG men’s golf team finished day one of the NCAA Stockton, California Regional tied for 10th place with No. 1 seed LSU with a team score of 5-over par 293 on Monday at the par-72, 7,239-yard The Reserve at Spanos Park. Senior Josh Stockwell turned in the best individual score for the Spartans, tying for 19th place at 1-under 71.
No. 10 Iowa State leads the 13-team field at 10-under 278. No. 8 Kansas is three strokes behind for second place, while No. 2 Alabama is four strokes behind in third place. No. 6 TCU (5-under 283) and No. 3 Stanford (3-under 285) are the only other two schools below par. No. 5 Oregon (1-over 289) is in sixth place followed by No. 7 Colorado and No. 12 UC Irvine (2-over 290) and No. 9 Kennesaw State (4-0ver 292). No. 4 USC is two strokes behind UNCG and LSU, and No. 13 North Dakota State is in last place at 9-over 297.
Stockwell went 1-under 35 on the back nine to start, and after a bogey and double bogey to start the front nine, birdied three of the next four holes. Jonathan Brightwell was one stroke behind Stockwell. Brightwell had three birdies and bogeys on the back nine and got par on each on the first nine holes.
Nick Lyerly and Bryce Hendrix are tied for 52nd place at 3-over 75. After going 4-over 40 on the back nine, Lyerly rebounded with a 1-under 35 on the front nine. Hendrix registered an even-par 36 on the back nine. Joseph Cansler notched a 7-over 79 for 72nd place.
UNCG will play the second round on Tuesday in a threesome with USC and LSU starting at 8:55 a.m. PT. on hole 10. Cansler will start things off for the Spartans, and Hendrix, Lyerly, Brightwell and Stockwell will tee off every 11 minutes after. Live stats can be found at golfstatresults.com.
