“I felt like I played really solid today in very tough, windy conditions.” Kenkel said, “I hit a lot of really good shots, I just didn’t see any putts go in. I’m proud of our team for fighting until the end and we’re still very much in the tournament.. I’m really looking forward to what we can do the next two days and I’m confident that all the hard work we’ve been putting in is going to show.”

Natalia Asensio and Tara Bettle finished tied for 21st and 26th, respectively. Asensio shot nine over on the day, recording six pars and three birdies on the back nine.

“The beginning of my round wasn’t as good as I would’ve liked.” Asensio said, “The wind was definitely a big factor today, but I was able to have a good back nine after the rough start.”

Bettle finished just 10-over par in the first round. The freshman shot nine pars and picked up a birdie on the 10th hole as she was one stroke back of a five-way tie for 21st.

“It was a rough day today with the winds.” Head coach Janell Howland said, “We didn’t manage the wind very well today, however they got some good work in after the round and are ready for tomorrow. This is a great test and I’m excited for the team because they seem up to and ready for the challenge the next two days. They are ready to see what they can do.”

Louisa Tichy was right in the thick of things as she finished tied for 28th with a 12-over par in the first round. Tichy shot nine pars and picked up a birdie as she finished tied with The Citadel’s Marina Grimal for 28th.

Newcomer Savanna Mackie added a 17-over par performance in her first round in two seasons. Mackie recorded five pars and a birdie as she tied with three players for the 35th position.

The second round of the SoCon Championships is set for tomorrow as UNCG looks to gain ground and knock off the defending SoCon Champion, Furman.
