ATHENS, Ga. – UNCG softball (13-6) fell 6-1 to No. 14/14 Georgia (18-1) on Sunday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium in the last day of the Ninth Annual Bulldog Classic.
Georgia claimed the lead in the first inning with a pair of two-run homers that just got over the right field walls.
The Bulldogs added another run in the next inning after a runner drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and eventually scored on an infield single.
The sixth run for Georgia came in the third inning with consecutive singles resulting in a run.
UNCG got on the board in the fifth inning. Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) drew a one-out walk, and Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) doubled off the right field wall with two outs to knock Matthijs in. The hit was the only for the Spartans in the game.
Hannah Stiltner (Mebane, N.C./ Eastern Alamance) started in the circle, recorded two outs, and gave up four runs, four hits and no walks. Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) relieved Stiltner and finished out the game. Bouplon allowed two runs, five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
UNCG will return to action next week with a weekend series against in-state opponent Elon. The Spartans will play a road doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and host the Phoenix for one game the following day at 1 p.m.
