SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG softball’s Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, the leagued announced Monday afternoon. Sholtes played a pivotal role in the Spartans’ 3-1 in the opening weekend of the season with by leading the team in almost every offensive statistical category in the opening weekend, including a .786 on base percentage and 1.667 slugging percentage.

Sholtes went 6-9 with three home runs and five walks in the Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina. In the season-opening run-rule win against Prebyterian, she went 2-2, all homers, with two walks, three runs and five RBI. She carried her power into the next game, hitting a solo-shot in her first at-bat against the host school and then drawing walks in her next two plate appearances. She went 2-3 with a walk and two runs later in the day in the win over Saint Francis (Pa.) and singled in the win against Iowa State.

UNCG will head to Florida next weekend for the Eastern Michigan Madeira Beach Spring Invitational, facing Massachusetts and Ohio on Friday to begin the tournament.
