Fourth-Seeded Men's Tennis Ready for SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis earned the four-seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament in 2017.  The Spartans went 9-13 in the regular season and 3-4 in SoCon play.  UNCG will take on the Wofford Terriers at 9:00 a.m. Friday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center, hosted by Furman University.  Wofford enters at 13-9 and 3-4 in the SoCon.  In the earlier meeting this season, UNCG defeated the Terriers 5-2.

Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) earned the Southern Conference’s Player of the Year award.  The junior finished the regular season with a 16-3 record and went 6-1 in SoCon play at No. 1.  Thompson continued his dominance in the doubles competition, earning a 16-4 record at No. 1.  Thompson is the third Spartan to earn the SoCon’s Player of the Year award and first since the 2012 season.

Other All-Conference performers include William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley).  Albright teamed with Thompson to go 10-2 during the season and 4-2 in SoCon play.  UNCG’s No. 2 doubles team of Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) and Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) paired to go a perfect 6-0 in SoCon play. 

Thompson has held down the No. 1 spot this season.  No. 2 has been manned by Vidgren.  Vidgren has gone 10-9 in his freshman season and is 4-3 in SoCon play.  He has earned SoCon victories against Chattanooga, ETSU, The Citadel and Wofford.  Albright has competed at No. 3 singles, earning a 4-17 record.  The senior has gone 1-6 in SoCon action, earning a victory against the Terriers last week.

Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./Longwood) has gone 5-7 at No. 4 singles and 4-3 in SoCon play.  Bryan has earned wins against Chattanooga, The Citadel, Samford and Wofford.  Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) has manned No. 5 singles.  Hammarstedt has gone 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the SoCon.  Hammarstedt earned SoCon wins over Mercer and The Citadel. Four competitors have manned No. 6 singles, with Burkill earning a 3-3 SoCon record.  Burkill defeated Chattanooga, The Citadel and Wofford. 

UNCG has earned a 36-23 record in doubles play this season.  Thompson has been a constant at No.1, earning a 16-4 record. Thompson and Albright have gone 10-2 and 4-2 in SoCon play.  Burkill and Vidgren have gone a perfect 6-0 SoCon record at No. 2 doubles.  Bryan and Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) have manned No. 3 doubles, earning an 8-8 record this season.  The pair have gone 4-3 in SoCon action, earning wins over Chattanooga, ETSU, The Citadel and Samford.

The men’s tennis team takes on the Wofford Terriers Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center at Furman University.
