Women's Basketball Continues Road Swing at Wofford Saturday Afternoon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s basketball continues its first Southern Conference road trip of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans will take on the Wofford Terriers at 2:00 p.m. inside Benjamin Johnson Arena on Wofford College’s campus. The Spartans enter with a 9-7 overall record, and are 0-1 in SoCon play after falling to Furman on Thursday night. Wofford is currently 10-5, and 1-0 in the SoCon having defeated Western Carolina on Thursday night.

UNCG leads the overall series with Wofford, 32-11. However, the Spartans have dropped three of the last four games.  UNCG’s last victory against the Terriers came in the 2014-15 season when the Spartans earned a 65-59 victory inside Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans last win in Spartanburg was during the 2012-13 season an 87-75 result. 

The Blue and Gold continue to be in the top half of the league in scoring offense and scoring defense, and ranking second in the SoCon, averaging +5.8 points per game. The Spartans shoot .409 from the field, ranking third in the league, while holding opponents to a .370 shooting percentage, second best in the SoCon. UNCG also leads the conference in rebounding margin, outrebounding opponents by an average of six rebounds per game.

A pair of freshmen average double figures and lead the Spartan offense. Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) leads all freshmen in the country, averaging 18.2 points per game. That average is second in the SoCon. Te’Ja Twitty (Rutherfordton, N.C./Rutherfordton-Spindale Central) has earned 11.0 points per game, while averaging a team-best 7.7 rebounds per game.

Wofford enters Saturday’s game having won back-to-back games against Kennesaw State and Western Carolina. The Terriers opened Southern Conference action on Thursday night as they hosted Western Carolina, defeating the Catamounts 78-49. A trio of players who scored in double figures led the Terriers in the victory. Maria Corella led all scorers with 18 points, Chloe Wanink added 17, and Marissa Bayer chipped in 10.

Overall, the Terrier offense is the top in the SoCon, averaging 68.2 points per game.  The team shoots at a SoCon-best .444 percentage, including a .378 average from 3-point land. Wofford also leads the league with 15.1 assists per game, totaling 227 assists on the year.

Wanink and Kentra Washington lead the Terrier offense. Wanink averages a team-best 15.5 points per game, and shoots at a .484 average.  She has been even more effective from three-point range, shooting at a .508 average. Washington adds 11.9 points per game, while shooting at a .435 clip. Grayson Pinholster leads the Terriers on the glass, averaging 7.1 rebounds per game. The senior forward adds 7.3 points per game, and shoots at a .549 average.

Tip-off is set for 2:00 on Saturday afternoon inside Benjamin Johnson Arena on Wofford College’s campus.
