GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team open the 2014-15 athletic season on the UNCG campus Wednesday night in emphatic fashion as the Spartans took home a commanding 8-0 victory over local foe Guilford College in an exhibition game. The Spartans broke the game open with three goals in the second period and five in the third period as the teams played three 30-minute sessions in the first action for both teams of the season.

Six different Spartans scored goals in the victory with freshman Tommi Gardarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/The Commercial College of Iceland) and sophomore Nicholas Downs (Great Falls, Mont./Charles M. Russell) each scoring a pair of goals to lead the charge.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 44th minute of play as freshman Neico Regent (Clarendon, Jamaica/American Heritage) won the ball in the midfield and found Gardarsson on the top of the box. Gardarsson drove across the top of the 18-yard box and beat a Guilford defender before drilling it past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

Just 1:48 later, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead as junior Jacques Francois (Port Au Prince, Haiti/Louisburg College) got in behind the Quaker defense and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. The scoring in the second period continued in the 52nd minute of play as Gardarsson beat his defender down the left side and ripped a shot on Guilford goalkeeper Eric Hayes. He made the save, but his rebound came right out front where redshirt sophomore Christopher Reingen (Dusseldorf, Germany) buried the ball for the 3-0 lead.

UNCG took the game into overdrive in the third period as it tallied five goals in the final 30 minutes. Senior Austin Miller (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) put the Spartans in front 4-0 as he buried a shot form six yards out off a pass from Francois. Gardarsson scored his second of the night in the 70th minute of play as sophomore Hill Gwynn (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) combined with him on a give-and-go spring in him behind the defense.

Junior Lukas Zarges (Freidrichsdorf, Germany/Phillip Reis Schulle) extended the lead to 6-0 in the 72nd minute of play as he easily converted a penalty kick after Guilford hauled down a Spartan in the box. Downs rounded out the scoring with back-to-back goals in less than three minutes of play as he scored both on breakaways off passes from Chandler Chappell (Hamptonville, N.C./Starmount).

Senior goalkeeper Davis Griffin (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) started and played 41:08 in goal while freshman William Pyle (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) played the 48:52 in goal for the combined shutout.

The Spartans return to action Saturday night for their second exhibition game of the season, hosting Liberty. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
