GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s basketball senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning. This marks the first weekly honor of Smith’s career and the second Spartan to earn the honor this year joining teammate Francis Alonso (Dec. 5).
Smith led the Spartans to a 2-0 record on the week, posting wins over in-state teams UNCW and N.C. State. He helped the Spartans post just their third win over an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent and the first-ever win over an in-state ACC opponent in program history with the 81-76 win over the Wolfpack.
Smith averaged 15.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game on the week, shooting 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the field, including five 3-pointers. He was a catalyst against N.C. State posting his first double-double of the year and fifth of his career with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. His play helped the Spartans out-rebound the Wolfpack by a 34-28 margin and was big with starting forward James Dickey saddled with foul trouble for most of the game.
Smith opened the week with a 14-point, 6-reboud effort in the Spartans 71-58 victory over UNCW. He has helped the Spartans win four-straight games heading into tonight’s contest against UNC Asheville. Smith is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game while adding 4.8 rebounds per game on the season as the Spartans own an 8-3 record overall.
