Volleyball Takes Six-Match Winning Streak On the Road to The Citadel
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball closes the 2017 regular season Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. as the Spartans will take on The Citadel Bulldogs. The Spartans enter the match as the hottest team in the Southern Conference, winning six-straight and eight of their last nine matches.
UNCG is currently third in the SoCon with a 17-10 overall record and 10-5 in league play. The Citadel is currently last in conference standings with an 8-23 record, 2-12 in league play. The match will have live stats available with a link on the UNCG volleyball schedule page.
The Blue and Gold hold a 29-2 advantage over The Citadel all-time. Earlier this season, UNCG swept the Bulldogs at home. The Spartans hit at a .211 average, scoring 38 kills in the match. The last time The Citadel knocked off UNCG was in 2009 at Charleston.
Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) and Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) swept the SoCon’s weekly awards earlier this week. Penner recorded 106 assists in two matches last week, and added 46 assists in Wednesday night’s five-set win over Western Carolina. Gregory has tallied three-straight 20-plus dig efforts, including a 30 dig effort Wednesday night.
Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) leads the Spartan offense with 362 kills or 3.58 per set. An all-around player, Muench records 2.73 digs per set and adds 52 blocks on the season. She also leads the team with 29 service aces on the year. Holly Behrends (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) is second on the team with 249 kills, averaging 2.59 per set.
Penner has recorded over 1,100 assists, her third-straight season of over 1,000 assists. She adds 2.64 digs per set in a backcourt that is led by Gregory. Gregory leads the team with a 4.63 digs per set average, third-best in the SoCon. The Spartan defense is second in the league with 16.57 digs per set, while limiting opponents to a .185 hitting percentage. Anna Romaniszyn (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek) adds 2.54 digs per set in her senior season.
The Citadel have dropped its last five matches. After nine days off, the Bulldogs will take on Western Carolina Friday night before hosting the Spartans.
Sharlissa De Jesus and Moriah Smith lead the Bulldog offense. De Jesus leads the squad with 3.45 kills per set, recording 314 on the season. She adds 3.04 digs per set in the backcourt. Smith, a preseason All-SoCon selection, adds 311 kills, 2.93 per set, and 2.69 digs per set.
The Bulldogs use a two-setter approach with Megan Fuhr and McKenzie Boland each recording over 495 assists. Fuhr leads the team with 563 assists and averages 2.01 digs per set. Boland has dished out 498 assists in 114 sets.
Caricia Rodriguez leads the Bulldog defense with 304 digs, averaging 3.10 per set as The Citadel records 14.46 digs per set. On the front line, The Citadel blocks on average of 1.79 attacks per set.
