GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman Erika Barquero picked up her sixth singles win of the season, tying teammates Sophia Adams and Emily Ory for the team lead, as she earned a 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 victory over James Madison’s Daniela Voloh on Friday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
Barquero was responsible for the lone UNCG point, as the Spartans fell by a 6-1 decision. Meanwhile, JMU improved to 9-6 overall.
The Dukes swept their way through the doubles matches, opening with a 6-0 win by the duo of Daria Afanasyeva / Emma Petersen, who downed Ory / Brianna Gomez. The second doubles win, 6-1, came from the tandem of Amanda Nord / Jona Roka, who faced off against Adams / Eugenia Camacho.
The No. 1 doubles tandem for JMU, which consisted of Voloh / Abby Amos, emerged with a 6-3 victory against Barquero / Nancy Bridges.
JMU extended its lead to 2-0 as Nord snagged a 6-4, 6-2 win against Ory in the clash of No. 6 singles. Afanasyeva quickly picked up the third point of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bridges.
Petersen not only picked up her second win of the day, but also clinched the match for JMU, with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Camacho in the clash of No. 5 singles. Roka came through with the fifth point for the Dukes as she downed Gomez by scores of 6-4, 6-4.
After Barquero emerged with the first win of the day for UNCG, JMU’s Amos ended the match with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (2-6), 10-5 win over Adams in the battle of No. 2 singles.
The Spartans return to action in six days when they head to Cullowhee, N.C., to face SoCon foe Western Carolina on Thursday, March 28th at 1 p.m.
