GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro’s men’s soccer team on Tuesday evening will host one of the top teams in the country when it goes head-to-head with Virginia Tech. Starting the season 3-0-2, the Hokies are ranked No. 16 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.

The Spartans enter the game with a 2-3-0 record, as UNCG won its first two games of the season against Presbyterian (1-0 in overtime) and Longwood (5-1) but have since lost three consecutive games by one goal. In their home opener against Davidson, UNCG fell in overtime by a final of 1-0 before being unable to hold a two-goal lead against High Point in a 3-2 loss last Tuesday. Then on Saturday, the Spartans made their longest road trip of the season when they traveled to Edinburg, Texas, to face UTRGV. Despite dominating second half play, UNCG was unable to come home with a victory in a 2-1 loss.

Seven different Spartans have found the back of the net this season including two goals from both senior Matt Mattis and sophomore Alex Henderson. Redshirt freshman Ricky Zarri, meanwhile, has started all five games in goal but senior Jon Milligan played the entire second half against UTRGV, recording two saves.

Virginia Tech, meanwhile, won its first three games of the season by defeating Air Force (2-1), Gardner-Webb (2-1) and South Florida (1-0). The Hokies then tied Central Florida 2-2 on Sept. 2 before tying No. 10 ranked Virginia 1-1 last Friday.

Tonight’s matchup will be the 16th all-time meeting between the Spartans and Hokies with UNCG currently holding a 10-5 series lead. In the last contest between the two schools, UNCG defeated Virginia Tech 1-0 in double overtime to open the 2015 season.

The two schools also met in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, with UNCG notching a 2-1 victory.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
