GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball has signed Anne Schölzel for the upcoming 2018 season, head coach Corey Carlin announced Friday. Schölzel joins incoming freshmen Mandy Garvens, Anna Gianni and Stephanie Meysembourg as the four newcomers to this year’s team.
An outside/middle hitter, Schölzel attended and played for SLZB (Schul- und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin) under coach Mirko Pansa in Germany. In the Third German League of the Club "Rotation Prenzlauer Berg Berlin,” she helped the team to a third place at the tournament Jugend trainiert für Olympia and also third place in beach volleyball at the same tournament. In addition, the team had a fourth place finish in the AAU International Tournament held last summer in Florida.
“Bringing in someone with Anne’s experience as an international player will definitely help our program take another step forward,” said Carlin. “She’s a very talented and versatile player that has a strong work ethic and is very proactive in taking on any challenge in front of her. She has all of the qualities you look for in a great teammate, making her a terrific addition to our program. We are definitely looking forward to working with her.”
Schölzel was a member of the youth club VolleyTeam Berlin and assisted the squad to two U18 German Championships, a runner-up finish at the U20 German Championship and third place at the U16 German Championship. She has also practiced with the German national team.
Schölzel will major in Mathematics.
The Spartans start training camp next Tuesday and kick off the season Friday, Aug. 24 against Air Force at 6 p.m. in the Spartan - Demon Deacon Classic.
