GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball relief pitcher Andrew Wantz was selected by the Los Angeles Angles Tuesday afternoon in the Major League Baseball Draft. Wantz tied UNCG’s career record for career saves, totaling 19 during his career. He is the second Spartan to be drafted during the 2018 MLB Draft.

Wantz was a four-year letterwinner for UNCG, earning All-SoCon honors twice during his career. He was a Second Team All-SoCon selection this season as he went 6-0 with a team-high 10 saves in 55.0 innings. He struck out 81 hitters and held opponents to a .214 average against. During his sophomore year, Wantz was named Co-Pitcher of the Year and was a First Team All-SoCon honoree. In four years, Wantz struck out 278 hitters, earning a 3.80 ERA. Those career totals rank third and ninth-best in program history.
