GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Spartan baseball team tallied four runs on five hits, all of which resulted in singles, in a 7-4 setback to Campbell on Tuesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans, who slipped to 22-12 on the season and 19-5 at home, got one RBI each from Caleb Webster, Hogan Windish, Ryan Caveness and Zach Kuchmaner. Among those with a hit in the game for UNCG were Windish, Austin Embler, Jacquez Koonce, David Flores and Zack Budzik.
UNCG sent seven pitchers to the mound, including starter Jeremiah Triplett, who tossed two innings and allowed three runs to the nine batters he faced. Brandon Stephens (1-2) suffered the loss for the Spartans despite converting four strikeouts over a three-inning stretch on the mound. Stephens allowed two hits, two runs and one walk to the 12 Campbell hitters he faced.
Chad Sykes worked a perfect eighth inning for UNCG, fanning two Campbell hitters in the process. The UNCG bullpen combined for 10 strikeouts in the game, while allowing just four runs.
Facing a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the second inning, UNCG took advantage of a single up the middle by Koonce, which put a runner on base. After moving to third on a grounder by Flores, Kuchmaner reached on a fielder’s choice to score Koonce from third.
The Camels (24-13) got the run back in the top of the third, but UNCG’s offense struck again in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back walks of Embler and Madole, coupled with a wild pitch, put the pair in scoring position for the Spartans with one out. Caveness lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Embler for the second Spartan run.
Windish was responsible for the third UNCG run in the fifth, plating Embler from third on a fielder’s choice. Embler drove in the final run of the night for the Spartans, in the form of Kuchmaner, after laying down a sacrifice run.
Campbell regained the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh before adding an insurance run in the eighth to complete the victory. The Fighting Camel offense was led by Matthew Barefoot (2-4, 2 RBI, run) and Spencer Packford (2-3, RBI, 2 runs).
