GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Nico Grewe picked up his team-best seventh singles win of the season on Wednesday, downing East Carolina’s Vlad Anghel in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) when the two teams met at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Grewe, who is now 7-6 in singles action, picked up the lone win in UNCG’s 6-1 setback to the Pirates. The Spartans slipped to 4-9 on the season in the process.
The Pirates (12-4) opened the match with a pair of doubles victories, assuming the 1-0 advantage in the process. The first came when Javier Renones / Wisse Jonker posted a 6-1 win over Grewe / Ollie Palmer. ECU grabbed the second victory as Will Bissett / Vlad Anghel tripped up Eric Whisnant / Ian Melnik by a 6-2 margin.
Diego Marques recorded the second win for East Carolina, first in singles, when he slipped past Palmer by scores of 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Renones grabbed his second win of the afternoon (6-3, 6-3) in a clash with Hugh Knapp.
Grewe got UNCG on the board with his win over Anghel, but Bissett clinched the match for East Carolina as he rebounded from an opening set loss to down Jack Burkill by a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 margin.
Jonker stretched the Pirates’ lead to 5-1 in the match after battling past Ian Melnik 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the clash of No. 4 seeds. The final win for ECU came by virtue of Ronny Georgi’s 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (11-9) victory over Roger Rogowski in a battle of No. 5 seeds.
UNCG will turn its focus to Southern Conference rival Wofford, who visits campus on Saturday, March 23. The following day, at 1 p.m., the Spartans will take on USC Upstate.
