GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis team came through with a pair of doubles wins and used a singles victory by Emily Ory to its advantage, but it was five singles wins by Mercer that proved to be the difference as the Bears posted the 5-2 win at the UNCG Tennis Courts on Sunday, March 17.
UNCG (4-9, 0-3 SoCon) opened the day with a win in doubles action as Nancy Bridges / Erika Barquero triumphed 6-2 against Katie Sidor / Celine Schepers. Mercer bounced back in the battle of No. 2 doubles as Alara Hollyfield / Maeva Roquebert posted a 6-2 victory against Emily Ory / Brianna Gomez.
The Bears, who moved to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference action with the win, picked up their first win of when Roquebert posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against Adams in No. 2 singles. Sidor rebounded from the earlier setback with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Bridges as the two clashed in No. 1 singles.
Mercer moved in front 3-1 in the match following a 7-6 (2-0), 6-4 by Schepers, who took down Gomez. That was quickly followed by a Hollyfield win over Barquero, by scores of 7-6 (4-0), 6-4, which clinched the match for the Bears.
Roquebert rattled off the fifth straight win for the Bears with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Adams in the battle of No. 2 singles.
Ory capped off the day with a three-set win for UNCG as she battled past Gutierrez by scores of 6-2, 6-7 (0-5), 6-4.
The Spartans remain at home for their next match, when they host Davidson on Wednesday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
