CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Go ahead and add another tally in the victory column for UNC Greensboro men’s basketball.

On Saturday night in front of a passionate crowd in McKenzie Arena, where Chattanooga was hosting both a blackout game and a reunion weekend for alumni, the Spartans downed the Mocs 78-63. With the victory, UNCG is now 22-3 on the season and has upped its record in the Southern Conference to 11-1. Additionally, the current eight-game winning streak is the longest this season, surpassing a seven-game stretch from Dec. 7-Jan. 5.

The victory was also UNCG’s sixth straight road victory, tying Wofford for the second-longest streak in the country behind only No. 1 Tennessee.

Despite leading most of the first half, UNCG went into the halftime break down three, 31-28, as the Spartans went cold from the field in the latter stages of the frame.

While the Spartans scored the game’s first five points on back-to-back possessions, a five-plus-minute drought pulled the Mocs within one before Chattanooga took over the lead with 3:15 remaining.

Additionally, UNCG made just one of its final eight shots before the break. Chattanooga, meanwhile, was 50 percent from the field in the first half.

UNCG senior guard Francis Alonso led all players with 10 points in the first half.

Despite falling behind 35-28 early in the second half, the Spartans used a 16-2 run to take a 44-37 lead with 13:35 remaining when junior forward Eric Hamilton made a reverse layup.

Still, the game was far from over as the Mocs once again went out in front at 46-45 with a little more than 10 minutes left in regulation. That lead, however, was short lived as Alonso once again made from three-point land.

The Spartans would hold the advantage for the rest of the game before scoring a 15-point victory.

The Spartans will return to action on Thursday night, playing Furman in Greenville, S.C.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
