Final 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle Brackets

GREENSBORO, NCAfter two days of wrestling, the team from Minnesota walked away with the 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle championship and claimed their third team title. The Golden Gophers also won four individual titles. UNCG had four wrestlers place as senior Jeff Hedges along with juniors Kane Smith and Ryan Hsu came away with eighth-place finishes. Placing fourth, senior Daren Burns was the top finisher for the Spartans .

At 133 pounds, Hedges lost a tough match to the No. 2 seed and sixth-ranked Mack Reiter of Minnesota in the championship quarterfinal round. Despite going into the third period down 13-2, Hedges gave Minnesota a 30-second scare as he got him on his back and held on until Reiter was able to regain position. Reiter went on to win the match with a 14-5 major decision to advance to the semifinal round.

In the fifth-round of wrestlebacks, Hedges held off Boise State’s Corey Fish to win 3-1 decision, but he couldn’t keep up the pace in the following round as he fell short to Andrew Hochstrasser (unattached) in a 7-4 decision. He finished eighth following a 10-3 loss to No. 8 seed Ricky Deubel of Edinboro.

In the 197-pound bracket, Burns pinned his way into the semifinal round with a 3:44 fall over the No. 6 seed, David Mendoza of Old Dominion in the second period. He went into second period behind, 3-2, but with Mendoza down on the mat, Burns was able to gain enough top-control to lay the shoulder to the mat for the count.

In the championship semifinal round, Burns lost a tough battle to Maryland’s eleventh-ranked 197-pounder. Taylor Hudson, the No. 2 seed and the eventual champion, took control early in the match and was able to hold Burns off for a 14-4 major decision.

A drop into the consolation bracket pitted the No. 3 seed against the No. 4 seed. Burns, ranked 12th nationally, made short work of Edinboro’s 15th-ranked Patrick Bradshaw with a 6-2 decision. He finished fourth following a 12-4 major decision loss to the No. 1 seed, Joseph Rovelli of Hofstra.

Burns is now 92-30 in his career. He needs just six more wins to tie UNCG’s all-time career win record of 98-25 held by Joe Stanton (1993-97).

Heavyweight Ryan Hsu dropped a tough 2-1 decision to No. 2 and ninth-ranked Zach Hammond of Cornell. For the most part it was a stand-up match, but a few quick moves gave Cornell the points and the ticket into the championship semifinals.

In the fifth-round of the 285-pound wrestlebacks, Hsu won an 8-3 decision over Joe Nord of Minnesota to push him into the consolation quarterfinals. In the quarters, he was defeated by the No. 3 seed and 16th-ranked, Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg in a 3-1 decision and he was overcome by North Carolina’s No. 8 seed, Justin Dobies following a 5:44 fall. Hsu finished eighth among 40 wrestlers.

Junior Kane Smith continued through the consolation bracket following a 9-1 major decision victory over Robert Johnston of Navy and in the fifth-round of wrestlebacks, he defeated Eric Shaw of Bloomsburg with a 3-2 decision. Smith faced Edinboro’s Bradshaw in the consolation quarterfinals, but was unable to hold strong. He dropped a 12-5 decision to send Bradshaw into the consolation semifinal round and onto the mat to face UNCG’s Burns.

In the seventh-place round, Smith was unable to finish the match and had to take a medical forfeit in the second period. He finished in eighth-place.

Sophomore Mitchell Johnson lost a 6-2 decision to Frank Perelli of Cornell in the fourth-round of the 125-pound wrestlebacks. In the fourth-round of the 165-pound weight class, sophomore Victor Hojilla suffered a 9-6 loss to Obie Simpson (unattached) and Navy’s Matt Demichiel topped redshirt freshman Byron Sigmon, 6-3.

Mikal McKee’s outstanding freshman showing at the Southern Scuffle was cut short as Kyle Kiss (unattached) fought him off to win a 6-5 decision in the fourth round of the 174-pound wrestlebacks.

In the championship round, the No. 1 seed and No. 3 nationally-ranked 125-pound Jason Ness (Minnesota) pinned the No. 3 seed and thirteenth-ranked Mike Sees of Bloomsburg in 5:48. Seventh-ranked and the No. 2 seed Mack Reiter of Minnesota defeated No. 1 seed and second-ranked Lou Ruggirello in a 5-4 decision for the 133-pound championship.

The Minnesota powerhouse continued to dominate in the 141-pound weight class as second-seeded and sixth-ranked Manuel Rivera defeated the No. 1 seed, third-ranked Charles Griffin of Hofstra with a 5-3 decision.

In a huge upset, Boston University’s Mike Roberts took the 149-pound championship title away from Minnesota’s No. 1 ranked wrestler and knocked off of the top-seed Dustin Schlatter with a close 3-2 decision.

Minnesota’s 10th-ranked CP Schlatter knocked off the defending 157-pound national champion, No. 2 Gregor Gillespie with a 5-2 decision. 165-pound and No. 14-ranked Mack Lewnes followed-up with a championship victory for Cornell as he won a 3-2 victory over Michael Chaires of Virginia.

No. 14 Alton Lucas of Hofstra won the 174-pound title after defeating the No. 2 seeded and eighth-ranked Mike Letts of Maryland and Kirk Smith (unattached) claimed the 184-pound title with a 1-0 decision over No. 1 seed and seventh-ranked Rocco Caponi of Virginia.

Eleventh-ranked and second-seeded Taylor Hudson of Maryland took the 197-pound championship with a 4:51 fall victory over No. 5 seed Brent Jones of Virginia and in a Navy vs. Navy battle for the heavyweight title, top-seeded and 14th-ranked Ed Prendergast pinned teammate Scott Steele in 8:19.
