GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's basketball has announced its 2019-20 schedule with the Spartans facing multiple teams who played in the postseason last year.
“We have put together a schedule that will challenge us for the rigors of the SoCon,” Patterson said. “Opening in Fleming with Richmond will be exciting as we will return an elevated, experienced group along with five newcomers. We have a blend of teams from various conferences such as ACC, A10, Big South, CAA, MEAC and the Sun Belt.
“We will play multiple teams with postseason experiences including WNIT, WBI and WBI Champions. We will be well-traveled, and experienced with the 15 non-conference opponents as we approach January.”
The Spartans will open 2019-20 at home, facing off with the visiting Richmond Spiders inside Fleming Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 5, before taking to the road for the following week with back-to-back games at Wake Forest and Coastal Carolina.
The Spartans hope to even up the all-time series at 7-7 with Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Nov. 10 before facing a Chanticleer team on Nov. 13 that reached the WBI last season.
UNCG will host two more games in the month of November with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (Nov. 17) and Division II foe Erskine (Nov. 26). The Spartans will also have a pair of road contests before the end of the month taking trips to Liberty (Nov. 21) and UNCA (Nov. 29). The Flames came within a single win of making the NCAA Tournament in 2019 after falling to top-seeded FGCU in the ASUN Championship Tournament final, while UNCA is coming off its fourth-straight trip to a national tournament after competing in the WBI back in March.
December will boast exciting home contests for the Spartans, as they face three squads at home on Lynne Agee court, which played in national postseason tournaments the previous year.
For the second-straight year, the Spartans will face a Georgia State squad (Dec. 7) that made its first-ever appearance in the WBI. They’ll also match up with nearby High Point (Dec. 21), as the Panthers won 22 games last season before earning a spot in the WNIT. Appalachian State, meanwhile, comes to town on Dec. 29 after winning the WBI this past April.
The Spartans will stay in state for all but one of their contests in the final month of 2019, traveling to the College of Charleston on December 16. UNCG will also take trips to Campbell (Dec. 3) and North Carolina A&T (Dec. 12) during December, the two of which competed in last year's WBI and WNIT tournaments respectively.
The first week of the new year will be highlighted by back-to-back home contests, as the Spartans welcome Lenoir Rhyne and Concord on Jan. 1 and Jan. 4.
SoCon action officially begins on Jan. 9, as the Spartans continue their slate of seven-straight home contests against ETSU before Chattanooga (Jan. 11) and Western Carolina (Jan. 18) come to town. The Spartans will have the opportunity to stretch their win streak against the Catamounts to five straight.
UNCG will return to the road for a pair of contests against Furman (Jan. 23) and Wofford (Jan. 25). The Spartans will close out the month hosting Mercer, who won the SoCon’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament last year.
UNCG opens up February with a home game against Samford (Feb. 1) before three-straight road games against Chattanooga (Feb. 6), ETSU (Feb. 8) and Western Carolina (Feb. 15). After welcoming Wofford (Feb. 20) and Furman (Feb 22) to Greensboro, the Spartans will close out the regular season at Samford (Feb. 27) and Mercer (Feb. 29).
The 2020 Ingles Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale will take place March 5-8 in Asheville, N.C.
