ARLINGTON, Texas - UNCG volleyball (5-1) completed a perfect weekend trip to the Lone Star state this Saturday, defeating hosts UT-Arlington (4-2) 3-2. The Spartans defeated Incarnate Word earlier on the day after sweeping Southern University 3-0 on Friday to walk away with a 5-1 record on the year, and their best start to a season since 2010.
UNCG jumped out to a quick start against the Mavs, kicking off the first set with a 10-3 advantage before going on to win the frame 25-22. The Spartans would cede the second game after falling behind early, while a late comeback bid fell just short in the 25-22 win for the Mavericks.
UNCG trailed by a set for the first time on the weekend, after the Spartans took seven of the first eight points in set number three, going on to put away the game at 25-12. Coach Carlin's squad was able to force a fifth set with a come from behind 25-23 victory before finishing the deciding period of the match with a 15-13 win.
The Spartans proved to be the strongest team in the tournament at this year's Maverick Classic, going a perfect 3-0 against their opponents. UNCG was just the second team from the state of North Carolina to compete in the weekend event, with their current 5-1 record standing as their second-best start to a regular season since 1994.
