SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s soccer is the 2019 Southern Conference preseason favorites after receiving the most points in the coaches’ poll, the league announced Thursday. Cienna Rideout, Marissa Ferrantino and Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper were selected to the all-preseason teams.

UNCG received 77 points and six first-place votes and were just one point ahead of the defending regular season champions Samford (four first-place votes). The Spartans and Bulldogs tied for the most players selected to the All-SoCon Preseason Team with three each. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams or players in the balloting.

Rideout is the reigning SoCon Player of the Year and was also a United Soccer Coaches’ All-Southeast Region Second-Team selection. She led the league in goals (14), game-winning goals (five), points (37) and shots per game (3.95) and tying for first in assists (nine) despite missing the first two games of the season. The senior forward tied for the fifth-most points in a single season in program history and also tied for ninth in goals. She opened the season with a four-game goal streak, recorded a point in 15 of 19 games played and had eight points in postseason play to garner a selection to the All-SoCon Tournament Team.

Ferrantino was selected to the All-SoCon First-Team last season. The senior defender

Ferrantino started every game for the Spartans and was third on the team in minutes (1,784). In addition to her defensive roles, she assisted on the game-winning goal against Furman and recorded another versus UNCW.

Tyler-Cooper garnered a spot on last year’s All-SoCon Second Team. The junior goalkeeper started all 21 games and ranked in the conference second in shutouts (six), third in saves (87), fourth in save percentage (.813) and fifth in goals against average (0.97). She increased her save percentage to .896 in conference games. She shut out opponents six times and combined with backup Anna Bryant for two more.

UNCG is coming off its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history with a 15-5-1 overall record after repeating as SoCon Tournament champs for the third time, something no other current SoCon school has achieved. The 2019 squad returns nine starters, including SoCon Freshman Player of the Year Nicole Souply and second-teamers Grace Kennedy.
