SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two recent UNC Greensboro graduates have received postgraduate scholarships from the Southern Conference, the league announced.
Former men’s soccer player Matt Mattis is the recipient of the Dave Hart Scholarship while former women’s soccer player Gabbi Charles received the Sports Medicine Institute Scholarship presented by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. The scholarships, worth $2,000 each, are awarded to student-athletes who intend to pursue advanced degrees in graduate or professional school. The student-athletes are evaluated on academics, athletics and community service according to the conference.
Mattis and Charles, along with eight other scholarship recipients, will be honored for their accomplishments at the Southern Conference Honors Dinner on May 28 in Hilton Head, S.C.
A four-year letter winner for the Spartans, Mattis helped the program earn back-to-back trips to the SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship title game during his junior and senior years respectively. Additionally, the Little Stoke, England native earned inclusion in Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society, in 2018. He was an economics major with a 3.76 GPA.
He intends to pursue a postgraduate degree in economics.
As for Charles, she was a two-time team captain for the Spartans as they won back-to-back conference championships. She also earned SoCon All-Freshman honors in 2015.
A kinesiology major with a 3.9 GPA, Charles has been honored on the Southern Conference All-Academic Team, named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll and has received the Commissioner’s Medal.
Charles will begin physical therapy school at Western Michigan University this month.
