GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro baseball team makes a quick turnaround, following its recent 9-3 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday evening, when it hosts a three-game series with Southern Conference foe Wofford beginning on Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m.
The Spartans, who have won 23 games at home this season, are tied for second in the league standings alongside Mercer with a 13-8 record (.619 winning percentage). Meanwhile, Wofford is 12-8 in SoCon action and has a .600 winning percentage. UNCG is 32-16 overall, while the Terriers are 31-22 entering the game.
UNCG, which has won nine of its last 10 dating back to a 9-8 victory over Elon on April 23rd, will open the series with freshman Austin Koehn (3-2, 3.68 ERA) on the mound. Koehn will be making his 12th start in 13 appearances for the Spartans on Thursday evening, his seventh against a league opponent. Wofford will send Hayes Heinecke (9-1, 2.95 ERA) to open the series.
The second game of the series, set for Friday, May 17 at 6 p.m., will pit UNCG’s Phillip Sanderson (5-3, 5.60 ERA) against David Yourke (1-4, 3.19 ERA). Sanderson, in search of back-to-back wins for the second time this season, finished off his last outing by recording five strikeouts and allowing four hits to VMI (May 11) over seven innings of work.
Saturday’s clash with the Terriers, set for 2 p.m., will serve as Senior Day for UNCG’s Austin Embler, Zach Kuchmaner, Jake Mayhew and Chad Sykes. Mayhew, who will make his fourth straight start, is 3-0 with a 4.41 ERA. Mayhew snagged a victory last weekend in the series finale against VMI, tossing four innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out two as UNCG earned the 13-3 (7 inn.) victory.
UNCG-Wofford Series Quick Notes
-UNCG and Wofford have squared off 69 times in program history with the Spartans holding a 47-22 lead in the all-time series. Nine of the 47 victories for the Spartans have come under the direction of head coach Link Jarrett, who recorded two of those victories at UNCG Baseball Stadium on May 3, 2015 (14-7) and April 15, 2017 (13-12).
-Austin Koehn is 1-1 with a 4.06 in his seven appearances against SoCon opponents. He has the most strikeouts (34) of any UNCG pitcher against league competition due in large part to recording at least five K’s in last six league games. That includes 5 versus Western Carolina (March 31), ETSU (May 4) and VMI (May 10). He came through with six K’s against Furman (April 7), Samford (April 20) and The Citadel (April 27).
-Phillip Sanderson owns a 3-2 record and a 6.82 ERA when facing SoCon opposition. He has made seven starts against league schools, logging 17.1 innings, allowing 13 runs, walking six batters (fewest of any starter) and has 22 strikeouts. In his last four conference outings, Sanderson has tossed at least four innings and tallied three K’s in three of those games.
-Jake Mayhew will make his fourth start of the season, all of which have come against SoCon opponents.
-Four UNCG sluggers have at least a .300 batting average in Southern Conference action, including Zack Budzik (.407), Greg Hardison (.346), Josh Madole (.313) and Hogan Windish (.302). Caleb Webster leads the way for UNCG in hits against conference opponents (26), while teammate Austin Embler is tops in RBI (16). Hardison tops the lineup in doubles (10), while Coleman Sawyer has two triples and Windish has four home runs, leading the respective categories.
-UNCG is a collective .282 (206-for-730) against SoCon opponents, scoring 118 runs along the way. The Spartans have a .440 slugging percentage and a .338 on-base percentage in 21 SoCon games.
