SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The trio of Nico Grewe, Ollie Palmer and Hugh Knapp were recognized by the Southern Conference on Tuesday, April 16th. Grewe and Palmer were named Second Team All-SoCon in singles and as a doubles team, while Knapp garnered All-Freshman honors for the Spartans.

Grewe has been honored by the league in consecutive years, after being named First Team doubles in 2018. Grewe claimed 10 singles wins for the Spartans and tied Palmer for most on the team with six as the No. 2 seed.

Grewe had two of his 10 singles victories came in conference play, including a 6-2, 6-4 victory over The Citadel’s Roy Hobson on March 4. The other took place on March 23rd in a clash with Julian Chousa, as the two battled to a tiebreaker before Grewe emerged 6-4, 7-6 (6-2).

Palmer, who has now been named to the Second Team in singles in consecutive seasons, enters the SoCon Tournament with 10 singles wins to his credit. He finished 3-3 in singles play against conference opponents, earning his first of three-straight wins versus league opposition when he downed The Citadel’s Jack Pyritz (6-1, 6-3). His second SoCon victory came against Furman’s Clark Wilson (7-6 {7-4}, 6-4) before downing Wofford’s Omar Williams (6-4, 6-2).

It marks the ninth time since the 2002 campaign that UNCG has had at least one player named Second Team All-SoCon in singles. The others include Nicklas Hansson (2002), Andrey Bubnov (2007, 2009), Ahmet Sarioglu (2011, 2012), Randy Phillips (2013) and Warren Bryan (2016).

Grewe and Palmer were 12-7 in doubles action, winning a trio of SoCon matches along the way. The first of those wins came against the ETSU team of Juan Lugo / Chris Mikrovas (6-4) on Feb. 22. That was followed by a win against The Citadel tandem of Willem van Zyl / Gavin Stewart (6-2) on March 4th. They ended March with a triumph against Wofford’s duo of Julian Chousa / Omar Williams 7-6 (15-13).

They become the ninth different UNCG duo to earn Second Team All-SoCon doubles honors since 2002. The other units were made up of Tanner Haddon / Bo McWharter (2002), Pieter Viesser / Julio Moran (2004), Daniel Mack / Sarioglu (2013), James Doughtery / Phillips (2014), Connor Thompson / Phillips (2015), Camerson Smith / Mack (2015), Jack Burkill / Marcus Vidgren (2016) and most recently Logan Walker / Vidgren (2018).

Knapp is the eighth Spartan to receive All-Freshman honors from the SoCon in program history. The Greensboro native capped off the regular season with eight singles wins and nine doubles victories, which came while playing alongside Burkill.

The first of Knapp’s three SoCon singles wins came against The Citadel’s Noah Nawabi (7-5, 6-2) on March 4. He followed that by downing Samford’s Sami Kirberg (6-3, 6-3) to close out play in March, before snagging a win over Stathis Tsiranidis (Mercer) by scores of 6-3, 6-4 on April 7th.

Knapp and Burkill combined to win three matches in doubles action beginning with a 6-1 win over The Citadel tandem of Nawabi / Phillip Quinn. Their most recent doubles wins came at Samford against Rossouw Norval / Daniel Orlita (6-2) and Mercer when they downed Tsiranidis / David Georgadze (6-4).

The Spartans return to action on Thursday, April 18th, when they take on second-seeded Furman at 3 p.m. in the first round of the SoCon tournament in Macon, Ga.
