GREENSBORO, N.C. –For the sixth-straight year, 100 percent of all current UNCG student-athletes made a gift to their team’s enrichment fund as part of the True Spartan Challenge. The challenge kicked off on April 2, and all teams were at 100 percent participation within 48 hours, a new record for the True Spartan Challenge.
UNCG is among a small number of schools across the country that have accomplished this level of dedication to its programs and Spartan student-athletes have made a bold statement about their commitment to UNCG Athletics. This feat is only one of the many goals UNCG student-athletes have reached in the classroom, on the field and in the community.
The True Spartan Challenge student-athlete giving campaign was developed as a partnership between the Spartan Club and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Through the True Spartan Challenge, student-athletes also competed to be the first two men’s and two women’s teams to 100 percent participation.
During this year’s True Spartan Challenge, the first two men’s teams to 100 percent participation were men’s soccer and cross country/track. Softball and cross country/track were the first two women’s teams to 100 percent participation.
For their achievements, men’s and women’s cross country/track, men’s soccer and softball will receive $250 in their enrichment funds while all other teams will receive $50 towards their enrichment funds. The Spartan Club is providing these enrichment fund bonuses.
"The True Spartan Challenge is a great way to show our support for the athletic department that has given us the opportunity to play our sports and do the things we love at the college level,” said senior Will Sandin, co-chair of the True Spartan Challenge and a member of the SAAC Executive Board. “When we give back, we ensure not only our own opportunities, but the opportunities of future student-athletes. Therefore, I am proud to be part of the group that helped extend our streak of 100 percent participation to six years.”
Gifts made to team enrichment funds are split, with 80% going to the team's enrichment fund and 20% going to the athletic scholarship fund. Enrichment funds allow teams to use gifts as enhancements to their operating budget for special one-time needs such as equipment, facility enhancements, out-of-region travel, and other items.
