BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men’s tennis team halted UNCG’s two-match winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Saturday, March 30 when the two Southern Conference units met in Birmingham, Ala.
Samford (9-7, 1-2 SoCon) snagged the first win of the afternoon in doubles action as the duo of Sami Kirberg / Jack Lyttle completed a 6-2 win over Nick Grewe / Ollie Palmer. UNCG’s Jack Burkill / Roger Rogowski quickly tied doubles action at 1-1 as they emerged with a 6-3 win over Rossouw Norval / Daniel Orlita.
The Bulldogs clinched the first point of the match as the combination of Max Rebol / Aleksandar Petrovic came through with a 6-4 win against Roger Rogowski / Ian Melnik.
Working with a 1-0 advantage heading into singles, Petrovic gave the Bulldogs a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rogowski in the battle of No. 4’s. Hugh Knapp answered with a 6-2, 6-3 win for the Spartans, downing Kirberg in the process.
Orlita stretched the lead back to two, 3-1, for Samford with a win over Grewe as the No. 2 seeds collided. Burkill came through with his second win of the match, posting a 7-6 (6-4), 6-2 victory over Rebol, moving UNCG back within a point in the process.
Samford secured the match when Norval fought his way to a three-set win (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) over Palmer in a clash of No. 1 seeds. The final Bulldog point came as Lyttle emerged with a 7-5, 7-6 (6-3) win over Melnik.
The UNCG road swing continues on Saturday, April 6, when the Spartans trek to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer at 1 p.m.
