BOONE, N.C. – The UNCG men’s team got their four-match road swing off to a good start by virtue of a 4-2 triumph over former SoCon rival Appalachian State on Tuesday, March 26. The Spartans, who won on Sunday afternoon against USC Upstate by a 6-1 margin have now won consecutive matches for the first time this season.
The match was decided on a win by Jack Burkill, who prevailed by a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 margin over Afonso Viana in the clash of No. 5 singles.
Appalachian State (4-14) grabbed the lead with the first point in the match as Alex Brea / Campbell Stone earned a 6-3 win over Eric Whisnant / Roger Rogowski. The Spartans evened the doubles play at 1-1 as Nico Grewe / Ollie Palmer posted a 6-2 victory against Milo Bargeron / Alex Pavkovich.
The Mountaineers used a win by the duo of Zion Heaven / Ben Webster took down Burkill / Hugh Knapp by a 6-4 score.
Knapp quickly rebounded from the doubles setback with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Heaven in the clash of No. 3 singles. Bargeron forged the Mountaineers back in front 2-1 as he claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 (ret.) against Grewe.
Palmer won the first of three straight for the Spartans (6-10) after posting a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Pavkovich. Rogowski followed by emerging victorious in a three-set battle against Webster by scores of 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-4, and Burkill closed the match with the decisive victory.
UNCG will look to extend its winning streak to three matches on Saturday, March 30, when the Spartans trek to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Samford at 2 p.m.
