GREENSBORO, N.C. – After winning the program’s first National Invitation Tournament game in program history earlier this week, UNC Greensboro men’s basketball will continue action on Saturday afternoon against Lipscomb.
Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
Five Facts To Know
--If UNCG is able to defeat Lipscomb on Saturday, the Spartans will become just the fourth team in Southern Conference history to win at least 30 games in a season, joining North Carolina (1945-46), North Carolina State (1950-51) and Wofford (2018-19).
--A victory against Lipscomb would match this year’s squad with last year’s for the most home victories in a single season (16).
--The matchup pits the two teams with the most wins remaining in the NIT bracket. UNCG enters the game with 29 victories this year while Lipscomb has racked up 26 victories. Additionally, the 55 combined victories between the two schools are easily the most of any second round match (Norfolk State and Colorado have a combined 44 victories in their matchup, the next most).
--Sophomore guard Isaiah Miller needs just six more steals to set a new SoCon single-season record, as ETSU’s Keith Jennings currently holds the record of 109 steals set in 1990-91. Miller this season has record six steals in three different games.
--Lipscomb this season shared the regular season Atlantic Sun title with a 14-2 conference record. The Bisons lost to Liberty in the Atlantic Sun Men’s Basketball Championship, and like UNCG spent last week on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament.
The Spartans This Season
A trio of All-SoCon selections in senior guard Francis Alonso, junior forward James Dickey and Miller, has led UNCG this season. Additionally, senior guard Demetrius Troy and junior forward Kyrin Galloway have been mainstays in the starting lineup.
Alonso, who became just the second player in program history to reach the 2,000-point mark in February, has been on a tear during the last four games. Between UNCG’s three appearances in the Ingles 2019 Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale and the team’s NIT-opening game against Campbell, Alonso is averaging more than 23 points per game.
Dickey, meanwhile, leads the team in rebounds per game (8.1) and total blocks (56).
As for Miller, he’s second on the team in scoring this season at 15.1 points per game.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Upcoming For The Spartans
If the Spartans defeat Lipscomb, the No. 1 seeded Spartans will take on the winner of No. 2 North Carolina State vs. No. 6 Harvard on either March 26 or 27.
