GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro softball (10-8) defeated Sacred Heart (5-6) in the first day of the Spartan Classic Friday at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans second game of the day against Saint Peter’s was postponed after the end of the fourth inning with the Peacocks leading 4-1 and will be played after UNCG’s game versus Towson tomorrow at approximately 2:00 p.m.

After leaving five runners on base in the first two innings against the Pioneers, the Spartans broke out for eight runs in the third. Katie Stettler led off with a walk, and the bases became loaded with singles by Gabi Howard and Stephanie Bryden. Delaney Cumbie brought in the first run on a walk, and the Spartans scored two runs on a one-out throwing error by the pitcher. With two outs, Monica Pepe hit an RBI-single through the right side. Makenna Matthijs knocked in Pepe and Samantha Lagrama on a double to right center. The final two runs were on a homer to right center by Stettler, her second of the year.

The final run for UNCG came on a two-out double down the right field line by Cumbie in the fifth inning.

Sacred Heart scored the game’s first two runs with a two-out homer to left field in the first inning and added three more runs in the sixth inning on another homer and two-RBI double in a failed comeback attempt.

UNCG scored its lone run against Saint Peter’s on a one-out, solo home run by Makenna Matthijs in the first inning, her second of the season.

The Peacocks scored first in the top of the inning with a run on a fielder’s choice and then had three runs in the third inning on an RBI-groundout and two-RBI triple to right field.

News and Notes

- Kylie Bouplon (2-2) threw her third complete game of the season. She allowed three earned runs, eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

- Matthjis, Stettler and Cumbie each had two RBI’s against Sacred Heart. Stettler and Matthijs were the only two Spartans with more than one hit with two each.

- Hannah Stiltner pitched all four innings against Saint Peter’s, allowing four runs, five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
