PUERTO RICO – UNC Greensboro men’s golf is currently tied with Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee for 10th place after one round of action at the Puerto Rico Classic taking place at the River Course of the Rio Mar Country Club.

The Spartans as a team collected a seven-over 295 in the first round. UNCG is just two strokes away from Purdue for seventh place.

The second round will begin tomorrow morning and the Spartans will tee at 8 p.m. between holes 11 and 15. Live stats will be available via Golfstat.com

The Spartans were led in the first round by sophomore Nick Lyerly, who shot a one-under 71 and is currently tied for 14th place. Lyerly recorded four birdies in the opening round.

Junior Jonathan Brightwell is also currently in the top 30, as he’s tied for 28th after carding a one-over 73 in the first round.

Senior Bryce Hendrix, meanwhile, shot a three-over 75. The senior was one-under 35 on the front-nine.

Rounding out team play for the Spartans in the first round were junior Grant Powell, who completed the day at four-over 76, and sophomore Zack Swanson, who was eight-over. 

Senior Mark Johnston, who is participating as an individual this week, collected an eight-over 80 in the first round. Johnson, along with the rest of the individuals, is playing on the Ocean Course at Rio Mar Country Club.
