GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro men’s tennis team will look to build off the momentum established by freshman Hugh Knapp’s win in singles play last weekend against Radford when the team hosts undefeated UNC Asheville on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
Knapp won 6-2, 7-5 against Radford’s Alexandros Caldwell, securing the Spartans first team victory of the 2019 campaign by a 4-3 margin. The Greensboro native was one of four UNCG players to win in singles play along with No. 1 seed Ollie Palmer, who claimed a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Yehven Sirous.
The Spartans’ Nico Grewe took care of fellow No. 2 seed Rodrigo Magalhaes by scores of 6-1, 6-2. Roger Rogowski completed the sweep by UNCG’s top four players as he won the battle of fourth seeds against Radford’s Pierre-Olivier Lassalle by margins of 6-4, 7-6.
UNC Asheville enters the weekend riding a six-match winning streak that began with a 7-0 sweep of Mars Hill in the Jan. 26th season opener. Since that point the Bulldogs grabbed wins against Lenoir-Rhyne (5-2), George Mason (6-1), East Carolina (4-3), Tusculum (5-2) and Chattanooga (5-2).
The Bulldogs’ doubles team of Oli Nolan and Henry Patten enter the match ranked No. 1 in the nation. The pair has three wins to their credit in 2019, claiming a 6-2 win against Edward Ayers / Jakob Nielsen (George Mason) on Feb. 2. Their second doubles win came at East Carolina, when they downed Ronny Georgi / Diogo Marques by a 6-4 margin the following day. In their first match after claiming the No. 1 ranking, the pair downed Chattanooga’s Kerim Hyatt / Simon Bustamante by a 6-2 decision.
