GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG’s Hugh Knapp won the battle of third seeds (6-2, 7-5) against Radford’s Alexandros Caldwell, securing the Spartan men’s tennis team’s first win of the 2019 campaign by a 4-3 margin.

Knapp, a Greensboro native, picked up his second singles victory of the season with the match-clinching win. He was one of four UNCG players to win in singles play along with No. 1 seed Ollie Palmer, who claimed a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Yehven Sirous.

The Spartans’ Nico Grewe took care of fellow No. 2 seed Rodrigo Magalhaes by scores of 6-1, 6-2. Roger Rogowski completed the sweep by UNCG’s top four players as he won the battle of fourth seeds against Radford’s Pierre-Olivier Lassalle by margins of 6-4, 7-6.

The tandem of Palmer and Grewe grabbed the lone win for the Spartans in doubles play, downing Sirous / Magalhaes by a 7-6 margin.

“This is a great win for our team,” said head coach Jeff Trivette. “It was all heart. I am happy for the guys to get their first win of the season.”

Radford established the 1-0 lead early, claiming a 6-2 doubles win the by second-seeded tandem of Caldwell / Michiel Meekers, who clashed with Knapp and Ian Melnik. That was quickly followed by a victory from No. 3 doubles partners Matko Varga / Andres Silva by a score of 6-2, who triumphed over Eric Whisnant and Jack Burkill.

The Highlanders briefly assumed a 2-1 edge in the match when Meekers posted a 6-4, 6-2 win against UNCG’s Cooper Wyett in singles action, but wins in succession by Rogowski, Palmer and Knapp solidified the win for the Spartans.
