GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro men’s team takes to the court for the first time in the spring season when it hosts Richmond for a 10 a.m. match at the UNCG Tennis Courts on Sunday, Feb. 3.
The Spartans return six players from a 2018 squad that finished 11-11 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Conference. Among the returnees includes the lone senior on the unit, Ian Melnik, who posted a 7-8 mark in singles action. Another key upperclassman is junior Jack Burkill, who concluded campaign with a 12-4 mark in singles action, all as the sixth seed.
UNC Greensboro will also look for solid play from Ollie Palmer, who posted the second-most singles wins a season ago (14) as he snagged seven as the third seed and six when slotted as a second seed. Classmate Nico Grewe was responsible for six wins last season, five of which came as the fourth seed.
Both Logan Blaser and Eric Whisnant, who each served as doubles partners to Melnik during the course of 2018, also return to UNCG this season after finishing with duplicate 0-1 records.
UNCG head coach Jeff Trivette will have three freshmen on the court this season, including Hugh Knapp, Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett. Knapp is a Greensboro native and three-year letterwinner at Grimsley High School, finishing 58-9 during his prep career.
Rogowski and Wyett were high school teammates at Marist College North Shore and hail from Lodz, Poland.
Richmond is 2-1 on the season, posting back-to-back wins over Hampton (Jan. 27) and Wofford (Feb. 2) after a 7-0 setback in the season-opener to rival VCU.
