GREENSBORO, N.C.– UNC Greensboro women’s basketball (8-12, 2-3 Southern Conference) defeated Western Carolina (4-16, 0-5 SoCon) 71-59 as three Spartans scored in double figures and junior guard Nadine Soliman recorded her third consecutive double-double Saturday in Fleming Gymnasium.

Soliman recorded a game-high 24 points and a game-high 12 rebounds with four assists and two steals, while junior forward Te’ja Twitty added 16 points, four rebounds and three steals on 8-for-12 shooting and sophomore Aja Boyd added 15 points, six rebounds and two steals on 6-for-11 shooting.

Junior guard Alexis Willey added six points and two blocks, while junior guard Alexis Pitchford added five assists, four rebounds and three points.

Western Carolina scored three of the first five points of the game to take a point lead, 3-2, with 9:07 remaining in the opening quarter, the only lead of the game for WCU.  The Spartans scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a seven-point lead, 12-5, with 6:48 left. The Catamounts scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to five points, 14-9, with 5:19 left, but UNCG scored eight of the final 10 points to take an 11-point lead, 22-11, with 2:22 left in the quarter.  Neither team scored during the rest of the quarter as the Spartans led by 11 points after the first quarter.

The Catamounts scored four of the first six points of the second quarter to cut the lead to nine points, 24-15, with 8:17 remaining in the quarter, but UNCG scored the next six points to increase the lead to 15 points, 30-15, with 7:24 remaining in the first half. Western Carolina scored 11 of the next 14 points to cut the lead to seven points, 33-26, with 3:48 left, but the Spartans scored five of the next seven points to increase the lead to 10 points, 38-28.  A WCU three-pointer with 19 seconds left to cut the halftime deficit to seven points, 38-31.

Western Carolina scored six of the first 11 points to cut the lead to six points, 43-37, with 6:37 remaining in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored 11 of the next 13 points to increase the lead to 15 points, 54-39, with 2:27 remaining in the quarter. The Catamounts scored the next four points to cut the lead to 11 points, 54-43, with 54 seconds left.  A Soliman jumper with 12 seconds gave the Spartans a 13-point lead, 56-43, after the third quarter.

UNCG scored four of the first six points of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 15 points, 60-45, with 6:58 remaining in the quarter, but the Catamounts scored 12 of the next 14 points to cut the lead to five points, 62-57, with 2:15 remaining in the game.  The Spartans scored nine of the final 10 points for the 12-point win.

The Spartans travel to Tennessee for two games against ETSU Thursday at 7 p.m. and Chattanooga Saturday at 2 p.m.
