GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball (7-12, 1-3 Southern Conference) fell to Mercer (11-7, 3-0 SoCon) 71-58 in Fleming Gymnasium Saturday as junior guard Nadine Soliman recorded her second consecutive double-double.

Soliman led the team with 23 points and with 10 rebounds and added two assists, while junior forward Te’ja Twitty recorded 14 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, and six rebounds, shooting 7-for-11 from the floor.  Her six rebounds give her 592 career rebounds to tie for 10th most in school history.

Sophomore forward Aja Boyd recorded her second consecutive double-digit scoring effort with 11 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the floor, and added five rebounds, while junior forward Mangela Ngandjui added six points on 3-for-4 shooting from the floor and junior guard Alexis Pitchford added five assists.

Mercer scored 10 of the first 14 points in the first quarter to take a six-point lead, 10-4, with 5:25 remaining in the opening quarter, but the Spartans scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to four points, 12-8, with 4:03 left.  The Bears scored the final five points to increase its lead to nine points, 17-8, after the first quarter.

The Bears scored 18 of the first 24 points of the second quarter to increase the lead to 21 points, 35-14, with 2:03 remaining in the first half, but UNCG scored the next four points to cut the lead to 17 points, 35-18, with 1:24 left.  Mercer scored the final four points to increase its lead to 21 points, 39-18, at the half.

Mercer scored 12 of the first 19 points of the third quarter to increase the lead to 26 points, 51-25, with 5:42 remaining in the quarter, but the Spartans scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to 23 points, 53-30 with 17 seconds left.  A Mercer three-pointer with three seconds remaining gave the Bears a 26-point lead, 56-30, after the third quarter.

But the Spartans wouldn’t give up as UNCG scored 28 of the first 41 points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 11 points, 69-58, with 1:22 remaining in the game, but a Bear jumper gave Mercer the 13-point win.

The Spartans finish the three game homestand with Western Carolina Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
