GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore forward Aja Boyd and junior forward Mangela Ngandjui each recorded a double-double as UNC Greensboro women’s basketball (6-8) fell to Coastal Carolina (8-3) 78-71 in overtime in Fleming Gymnasium to snap a six-game home winning streak.
Boyd led the team with a game-high 14 rebounds and added 17 points, while Ngandjui added 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor and 12 rebounds.
Junior guard Nadine Soliman led the team with a game-high 22 points and with a game-high seven assists and added six rebounds and three steals, while sophomore guard Cece Crudup added eight points and six assists and junior guard Alexis Pitchford added five points and six assists.
The Spartans scored the first five points of the first quarter to take a 5-0 lead with 8:39 remaining in the opening quarter, but Coastal Carolina scored 17 of the next 19 points to take a 10-point lead, 17-7 with 3:14 left. UNCG scored 12 of the final 14 points to tie the game at 19 after the first quarter.
UNCG scored nine of the first 11 points of the second quarter to take a seven-point lead, 28-21, with 6:01 remaining in the quarter, but Coastal Carolina scored 13 of the next 17 points to take a two-point lead, 34-32, with 1:04 left in the first half. A Soliman jumper with 35 seconds left tied the game at 34 at the half.
Coastal Carolina started the third quarter with a layup to take a two-point lead, 36-34, with 9:40 remaining in the quarter, but the Spartans scored six of the next eight points to take a two-point lead, 40-38, with 5:26 left. Coastal Carolina scored 10 of the next 15 points to take a five-point lead, 50-45, with 39 seconds left, but a Boyd layup with two seconds left cut the third quarter lead to three points, 50-47.
The Spartans scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to take a two-point lead, 52-50, with 7:33 remaining in the quarter, but Coastal Carolina scored 10 of the next 16 points to take a two-point lead, 60-58, with 3:23 left. UNCG scored the next four points to take a two-point lead, 62-60, with 2:29 left, but a Coastal Carolina jumper with 2:00 left tied the game at 62 to send it into overtime.
In the overtime period, Coastal Carolina scored eight of the first 10 points to take a six-point lead, 70-64, with 2:46 remaining, but the Spartans scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to four points, 72-68, with 54 seconds left. Coastal Carolina scored the next six points to increase the lead to 10 points, 78-68 with five seconds left, but a Pitchford three-pointer with two seconds left cut the final deficit to seven points.
The Spartans start a three-game road trip starting with Richmond Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Richmond, Va., before starting Southern Conference play.
