GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three UNC Greensboro women’s volleyball student-athletes recorded double-doubles as the Spartans (13-15, 7-9 Southern Conference) finished the regular season defeating Furman (12-15, 8-8 SoCon) 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23) Saturday night in Fleming Gymnasium on Senior Day.

Sophomore outside hitter Holly Behrends led the team with 12 kills and added 15 digs for her second consecutive double-double, while senior setter Allison Penner led the team with 31 assists and added 12 digs and sophomore setter Giana Rasmussen added 21 assists and 13 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch also led the team with 12 kills, while freshman defensive specialist Mandy Garvens led the team with a match-high 26 digs and junior outside hitter Rebecca Rice added 11 kills.

Junior middle hitter Lauren Robeck added nine kills and six blocks, while junior middle hitter Mikaela Weidmann added nine kills and four blocks and junior defensive specialist Grace Howell added 15 digs.

Furman scored 15 of the first 22 points in the first set to take an eight-point, 15-7, but the Spartans 13 of the next 18 points to tie the set at 20.  The Paladins scored three of the next four points to take a two-point lead, 23-21, but UNCG scored the next two points to tie the set at 23.  Furman scored the final two points to win the set by two points and to take a 1-0 match lead.

UNCG scored six of the first eight points in the second frame to take a four-point lead, 6-2, but Furman scored 15 of the next 25 points to take a point lead, 17-16.  The Spartans scored the next two points to take a point lead, 18-17, but the Paladins scored five of the next seven points to take a two-point lead, 22-20.  UNCG scored the final five points to win the set by three points and to tie the match at one.

The Spartans scored three of the four points in the third stanza to take a two-point lead, 3-1, but Furman scored seven of the next 12 points to tie the set at eight.  The Spartans scored eight of the next 11 points to take a five-point lead, 16-11, forcing a Furman timeout.  After the timeout, the Paladins scored seven of the next 10 points to cut the lead to a point, 19-18, but the Spartans scored six of the final eight points to win the set by five points and to take a 2-1 lead.

Furman scored nine of the first 13 points in the final set to take a five-point lead, 9-4, forcing a UNCG timeout.  After the timeout, the Spartans scored nine of the next 11 points to take a two-point lead, 13-11, but the Paladins scored four of the next five points to take a two-point lead, 16-14, forcing another Spartan timeout.  After the timeout, UNCG scored the next four points to take a two-point lead, 18-16, but Furman scored three of the next four points to tie the set at 19.  The Spartans scored six of the final 10 points to win the set by two points and the match.

The Spartans finish the regular season on a two-match winning streak and host the SoCon Volleyball Championship from Nov. 16-18 in Fleming Gymnasium. UNCG is the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 seed Furman Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
