GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore outside hitter Holly Behrends recorded a double-double as UNC Greensboro women’s volleyball (12-15, 6-9 Southern Conference) defeated Wofford (14-15, 7-9 SoCon) 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18) Friday night in Fleming Gymnasium.

Behrends recorded 11 kills and 12 digs and added three service aces, while sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch led the team with 12 kills and recorded a .276 hitting percentage with four digs and two blocks and senior setter Allison Penner led the team with 24 assists.

Freshman defensive specialist Mandy Garvens led the team with 21 digs, while sophomore setter Giana Rasmussen added 17 assists and eight digs and junior middle hitter Mikaela Weidmann added eight kills and four blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Anne Schölzel added eight kills, six digs and three blocks, while junior middle hitter Lauren Robeck added five kills and nine digs and junior defensive specialist Grace Howell added eight digs.

The Spartans scored 13 of the first 23 points in the first set to take a three-point lead, 13-10, but Wofford scored the next five points to take a two-point lead, 15-13.  UNCG scored three of the next four points to tie the set at 16, but the Terriers scored three of the next four points to take a two-point lead, 19-17.  The Spartans scored the next six points to take a four-point lead, 23-19, but Wofford scored the next three points to cut the lead to a point, 23-22.  UNCG scored the final two points to win the set by three points to take a 1-0 match lead.

UNCG scored nine of the first 12 points in the second stanza to take a six-point lead, 9-3, but Wofford scored back-to-back points to cut the lead to four points, 9-5.  The Spartans scored the next three points to increase the lead to seven points, 12-5, but the Terriers scored 14 of the next 19 points to take a two-point lead, 19-17.  Both teams scored two points to keep the set tied at two, 21-19, but UNCG scored five of the next seven points to take a point lead, 24-23.  After a Wofford point to tie the set at 24, the Spartans scored the final two points to win the set by two points to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Spartans scored five of the first eight points in the third frame to take a two-point lead, 5-3, but Wofford scored eight of the next 15 points to cut the lead to a point, 12-11.  UNCG scored five of the next six points to increase the lead to five points, 17-12, but the Terriers scored the next seven points to take a two-point lead, 19-17.  Wofford outscored UNCG 6-5 during the rest of the set to win the set by three points and to cut the match lead to 2-1.

UNCG scored 12 of the first 16 points in the fourth set to take an eight-point lead, 12-4, but Wofford scored the next four points to cut the lead to four points, 12-8.  The Spartans scored the next three points to increase the lead to seven points, 15-8, but the Terriers scored five of the next eight points to cut the lead to five points, 18-13.  UNCG scored the next three points to increase the lead to eight points, 21-13, but Wofford scored the next three points to cut the lead to five points, 21-16.  The Spartans scored four of the final six points to win the set by seven points and to win the match.

The Spartans finish the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. against Furman in Fleming Gymnasium for Senior Day.
