GREENSBORO, N.C.- Through the first two rounds of the Idle Hour Collegiate taking place in Macon, Ga., UNC Greensboro’s women’s golf team (309-301) is in seventh place. The Spartans are two strokes behind sixth place Texas A&M Corpus Christi and five strokes away from the top five.
The third and final round will take place tomorrow morning and live stats will be available on GolfStat.com.
Sophomore Keri Kenkel (79-71) led the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon, highlighted by her one-under 71 in the second round. After shooting a one-over 37 on the front nine, Kenkel was two-under on the back nine as she carded birdies on holes Nos. 10 and 13.
“I didn’t get off to the start I would’ve liked, but I’m proud of myself for having a good second round,” Kenkel said. “I wasn’t hitting great to start off and I had one bad hole but I made some really good short-game shots and managed the course well as it was playing tough. I’m proud of the team for fighting through today and we’re excited to move up the leaderboard tomorrow and end the season on a good note.”
Senior Lexi Kershaw (73-78), meanwhile, shot a one-over 73 in the first round highlighted by two birdies on both the front nine and the back nine.
“I had a good start to the day and had to learn to grind it out,” Kershaw said. “It wasn’t my best day of golf but I made it work the best I could today with what I had. I made a lot of great putts today and fought. We’re excited to see what we can do tomorrow and finish well.”
Sophomore Tara Bettle (80-74) was six strokes better in the second round than her first round performance, as the Berlin, Germany, native holed two birdies.
Freshman Hailey Joy (78-78), is currently tied for 39th place and junior Louisa Tichy (79-80) is one of six golfers tied for 51st place.
