GREENSBORO, N.C.– UNC Greensboro's men's basketball team will begin its 2018-19 season on Tuesday evening, facing North Carolina A&T at the Corbett Sports Center.
First tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Five Facts To Know
--Since joining the Division I ranks starting in the 1991-92 season, UNCG is 8-17 in season openers with its last victory on the first game of a season coming in 2015 when the Spartans defeated Greensboro College. UNCG began each of the previous two seasons against Virginia.
--He's been draining threes for years now, but senior guard Francis Alonso is just 12 made three pointers away from becoming the program's all-time leader in the statistical category. Entering his senior season, Alonso (298) trails only Scott Hartzell (309) for the most three pointers made by a Spartan.
--Junior forward James Dickey was named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, given annually to the top center in men's college basketball.
--The Spartans welcome four new freshmen to the roster this season along with transfer guard Michael Hueitt Jr., who --will redshirt this season.
North Carolina A&T enters the matchup riding a 13-game home winning streak, which is tied for the sixth longest streak in Division I right now.
The Spartans In 2018
Coming off SoCon regular season and tournament titles, UNCG is favored to win the conference again. In both the preseason coaches' and media polls, the Spartans were picked to come out on top of the SoCon. In the coaches' poll, the Spartans received 78 total votes and six first-place votes. In the media poll, the Spartans received 231 total votes and 16 first-place votes.
Additionally, both Alonso and Dickey were named to the preseason All-SoCon Team.
Tuesday's game marks the 19th meeting between UNCG and North Carolina A&T, as the Spartans trail in the all-time series 7-11. UNCG, however, won the last matchup between the two schools that took place on Nov. 29, 2016, 86-66.
At the Corbett Sports Center, meanwhile, UNCG is 0-2 having fallen to the Aggies in 2011 and 2015.
For 10 straight years from 1992-2002, the two Greensboro schools faced off with five of those contests coming in the Wrangler-Nat Greene Classic.
Upcoming For The Spartans
Tuesday's game will be the first of three straight road games to start the season for the Spartans, as they'll next travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on No. 23 LSU on Nov 9.
Following its matchup with LSU, UNCG will then head across the state of North Carolina to face UNCW on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
