BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– UNC Greensboro volleyball team (10-14, 4-8 Southern Conference) fell to Samford (12-13, 7-4 SoCon) 3-0 (23-25, 21-25, 18-25) Friday night in Pete Hanna Center to start a three-match road trip.
Junior middle hitter Mikaela Weidmann led the team with 11 kills and recorded a .429 hitting percentage, while senior setter Allison Penner recorded a double-double with a team-high 24 assists and 12 digs and added four kills with a .600 hitting percentage.
Junior middle hitter Lauren Robeck added seven kills with a .312 hitting percentage and added five blocks, while freshman defensive specialist Stephanie Meysembourg added 11 digs and six assists. Anne Schölzel added five blocks and four kills and junior defensive specialist Grace Howell added nine digs.
Samford scored five of the first eight points in the first set to take a two-point lead, 5-3, but the Spartans scored three of the next four points to tie the set at six. The Bulldogs scored nine of the next 13 points to take a five-point lead, 15-10, forcing a UNCG timeout. After the timeout, the Spartans scored 13 of the next 20 points to take a point lead, 23-22, but Samford scored the final three points to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Spartans scored four of the first five points in the second stanza to take a three-point lead, 4-1, but Samford scored nine of the next 12 points to take a three-point lead, 10-7, forcing a UNCG timeout. After the timeout, the Spartans scored seven of the next eight points to take a three-point lead, 14-11, forcing a Samford timeout. After the timeout, the Bulldogs scored 10 of the next 14 points to take a three-point lead, 21-18. UNCG scored the next three points to tie the set at 21, but Samford scored the final four points to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Bulldogs scored four of the first six points of the final frame to take a two-point lead, 4-2, but UNCG scored four of the next six points to tie the set at six. Samford scored 11 of the next 14 points to increase the lead to eight points, 17-9, but the Spartans scored five of the next eight points to cut the lead to six points, 20-14. Samford scored five of the final nine points to win the set and the match.
The Spartans continue the road trip with a match against Chattanooga Saturday at 6 p.m.
