GREENSBORO, N.C.– UNC Greensboro volleyball team (10-13, 4-7 Southern Conference) fell to Western Carolina University (12-11, 6-6 SoCon) 3-1 (23-25, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25) in Fleming Gymnasium to end a three-match homestand.

Junior outside hitter Emily Keilen recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs, while senior setter Allison Penner recorded a double-double with a match-high 41 assists and 15 digs and added seven kills with a .353 hitting percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch led the team with 14 kills and with four blocks, while junior middle hitter Lauren Robeck added 11 kills and four blocks and freshman outside hitter Anne Schölzel added nine kills.

Freshman defensive specialist Stephanie Meysembourg led the team with a match-high 28 digs, while junior defensive specialist Grace Howell added 12 digs and freshman defensive specialist Mandy Garvens added 11 digs.

Western Carolina scored seven of the first 11 points in the first set to take a three-point lead, 7-4, but the Spartans scored five of the next six points to take a point lead, 9-8.  WCU scored 13 of the next 19 points to take a six-point lead, 21-15, but UNCG scored six of the next seven points to cut the lead to a point, 22-21.  The Catamounts scored three of the final five points to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.

The Catamounts scored six of the first eight points in the second frame to take a four-point lead, 6-2, but the Spartans scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to two points, 7-5.  Western Carolina scored 12 of the next 17 points to increase the lead to nine points, 19-10, but UNCG scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to seven points, 20-13.  WCU scored five of the last nine points to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Spartans scored six of the first eight points in the third stanza to take a four-point lead, 6-2, but Western Carolina scored seven of the next 13 points to cut the lead to two points, 11-9.  UNCG scored the next four points to increase the lead to six points, 15-9, but the Catamounts scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to three points, 17-14.  UNCG scored eight of the final 14 points to win the set and to cut the match lead to 2-1.

UNCG scored the first three points of the final set for a 3-0 lead, but Western Carolina scored five of the next six points to take a point lead, 5-4.  The Spartans scored five of the next seven points to increase the lead to four points, 10-6, but WCU scored eight of the next 10 points to take a two-point lead, 14-12.  UNCG scored six of the next eight points to take a two-point lead, 18-16. The Catamounts scored nine of the final 11 points to win the set and to win the match.

The Spartans start a four-match road trip starting with a trip to Birmingham, Ala., to face Samford Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
